jeffers: granite & cypress JEFFERS, Robinson.
GRANITE & CYPRESS..

Santa Cruz, CA: The Lime Kiln Press/ The University of California, Santa Cruz, 1975.
Limited Edition. Oblong Folio. Thirty-three leaves, printed rectos only. One of one hundred numbered copies, signed by William Everson in the colophon.
"One Hundred Copies of this book have been printed under the direction of William Everson. The title page woodcut is by William Prochnow. Types used are Goudy Newstyle and Castellar initials. The paper is Hayle, an English handmade. Binding is by The Schuberth Bookbindery of San Francisco. The slipcase, fashioned by one who prefers to remain anonymous, is of Monterey Cypress. Its window of granite is from Jeffers' own stoneyard. Printed on a double crown Acorn handpress, The McHenry Library, University of California, Santa Cruz". Generally heralded as one of a small handful of truly great works of book arts in America in the twentieth century.

In speaking of Everson, Dan Gioia remarked "The extravagant beauty of his greatest books–especially Novum Psalterium Pii XII and Granite & Cypress–have earned him a permanent place in the history of American fine printing. Beyond their sheer physical beauty, Everson's productions demonstrate the creative power that deep, intuitive literary intelligence can bring to book design. However magnificent their form, the total design of his books grew naturally out of the needs of the text. No one, for instance, can read Granite & Cypress without learning something essential about Jeffers' prosody. Every aspect of Everson's notably original and yet simple design reveals a profound, holistic understanding of the poetry." ~ Dana Gioia, originally published in the "Robinson Jeffers Newsletter", no. 93 & 94, Winter/Spring 1995. (48624) $12,500.
